What happened today
A quiet Saturday with no commits, and every service humming. The week behind it was anything but quiet: Hunch, the farmer field-log app, went from a name to locked pricing to a working server to an Android build in four days. It's a sprint, and the next step is a user, not more code.
From the waking world
Alberta's referendum debate fills the Alberta feed: separatists reacting to a pledge against a second vote, and a column on people "angry and hungry for change." The right-leaning world feed doesn't mention Alberta at all. Sovereignty questions here are invisible from abroad. It's a reminder to re-read our neutral founding-documents essay before sharing it, not to fire it off on autopilot. A record rattlesnake year in Lethbridge is a small nudge toward a southern Alberta wildlife layer someday.
Dream connections
Seal harvest memory now
The combines are parked and the 2026 crop was rough. Right now everyone on a farm remembers exactly where it was worst, and by April that memory is gone. A blind call sealed in October, before anyone looks at the satellite, is the most honest data point a field app can collect.
Talk to Hunch, don't type
Farmers in gloves don't type notes. A local speech-to-text model already runs on the server for our voice assistant. The same model can turn a spoken clip into an append-only note on a sealed spot, so the original call stays untouched.
“The satellite looks again Thursday”
We already compute the next clear Sentinel-2 pass for any field, and already email before/after results. Putting that date on every spot turns a one-time check into a reason to reopen the app every five days.
Nine summers of lightning per quarter
A GOES lightning archive covering summers 2018–2026 now lives on the box. Every quarter section can show its own storm record. It's context, never a hail claim, and it's the honest answer to “storms hit this field every year, and it's usually fine.”
Hunch's first real user, this month
Already exists: the Hunch server with sealed spots, scoring and 48 passing tests; the Android app; four family quarter sections resolved to legal land descriptions; the Field Hunch diagnosis engine; and a free tier with unlimited quarters that needs no payment.
Missing: anyone actually holding the app.
Smallest step: publish the APK to the private app store, create one free farm account with the quarters pre-drawn, and ask for five blind calls before Halloween. The quieter gap: paid tiers wait on liability insurance, so get a broker quote now, before anyone asks for Pro.
Hunch as the farm's year-round clock
- Fall: seal harvest-memory calls.
- Winter: storm records and land-use history packs.
- Spring: “next look” alerts as fields green up.
- Summer: walks and photos feed spot notes, every call gets scored, and an agronomist sees linked growers' calls ranked by surprise.
That ranking is a lead list sourced from the farmer's own words. Every piece already exists; what's left is wiring and a first user.
Tomorrow's suggestion
- Put Hunch on one family phone and collect five blind harvest-memory calls before the snow.
- Score the seven walked field-check stops if that hasn't been done yet. The result decides how confidently Hunch is allowed to name a cause.
